This is the 3rd appearance of this camera on CSM CS - The lens belonged to Andrea’s father and the soft release was recently purchased from the wonderful Map Camera in Shinjuku.

Documentary telling the gripping and shocking story of photographer Erwin Blumenfeld, who survived two world wars to become one of the world’s most highly-paid fashion photographers and a key influence on the development of photography as an art form. Yet after a mysterious death in Rome in 1969 his name is little-known today, the reasons for which lie in his unconventional lifestyle.

The first ever film about his life and work uses exclusive access to Blumenfeld’s extensive archive of stunning photographs, fashion films, home-movies and self-portraits to tell of a man obsessed by the pursuit of beautiful women, but also by the endless possibilities of photography itself.

With contributions from leading photographers Rankin, Nick Knight and Solve Sundsbo and 82-year-old supermodel Carmen Dell’Orefice, it uncovers the richly complex story of one of the 20th century’s most original photographic artists.

A trip to BDI is always a treat. Although much of the work is digatlly printed it remains a very traditional lab and it’s owner Brian Dowling is not only a genius with colour but also one of the nicest people you could hope to meet.

This new site showcases some of Brian’s own extraordinary photographic work.

It was also an added bonus during my visit to catch up with ex CSM student Lucy Campbell.

““Oh I’m full of things that are considered blasphemy in today’s industry. I don’t like dslr’s. I don’t think digital is a good way for most people to learn photography. I don’t think there is any way to archive digital files, at least I’ve never found a single person who actually knows how or has any real plan for the future. I think a lot of photographers, after switching to digital, are not nearly as good as they were during their analog days. I think digital has killed the editing abilities of most photographers. I don’t think seeing an image right after you make it is a good thing. I don’t think having the ability to overshoot every scene actually helps make better images. I think digital has trivialized the idea of photography in the minds of everyday people. I think our industry is now almost entirely centered around technology as opposed to imagery. I’ve never seen an HDR image I like, and the fact I’m starting to see this technique creep into nearly every genre of photography makes me sick.
How is that for starters? I don’t get invited to many parties these days. At the core, digital is a great thing. What we do with it, how we use it…that is another matter.””

Apparently Tim’s grandfather said he had an old camera to give him. Usually in these circumstances the gift turns out to be well intentioned but somewhat disappointing - in this case it was a Leica and 3 lenses!
